How to Use Predictive AI and Your Data to Unleash Your Inner Winner! (an experimental workshop)

About this Workshop

“We’re trying to educate business leaders — again, not necessarily about the underlying AI engine, but what AI can do and how it can actually impact them, their business, and their capabilities. Because it is going to start to become a core part of the cultural essence of many companies, understanding what it can do and how it can be integrated.”  -- Norm Judah (CTO, Microsoft Enterprise)

According to new research published this month by Microsoft where over  800 business executives in the U.S. and 7 European nations were surveyed about their plans for adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their organizations, executives who are investing in AI are also interested in internal initiatives to motivate their human employees to use and become comfortable with AI. Motivating or inspiring employees to use AI ranked highest among 15 response options for how executives plan to invest alongside AI.

As companies around the world begin to prioritize motivating employees to work with AI, employees who embrace this challenge early will undoubtedly become extremely valuable to their organizations and have a huge competitive advantage. But how can ordinary people working in companies today become comfortable experimenting with AI on their own and how can they motivate themselves?

In this special, experimental workshop with guest instructor Jamie Brew (CEO of Botnik, a company that produces parodies using neural language processing and machine learning), we will use humor and fiction to experiment with predictive AI tools and your personal data,  to become comfortable with exploring the potential (and limitations!) of machine learning and natural language processing. Jamie is a regular speaker at events and conferences, where he uses music and comedy to explain concepts in machine learning and natural language processing

Upon entering the workshop, you will instantly be transported into a fictional, award-winning, data-driven self-help seminar that promises to help you up your game and find your inner winner with AI through a process of experimentation and discovery! The results will undoubtedly be enlightening and fun. See the full description in the next tab.

By the end of the program, you'll have:

--  A personal self-help portfolio written with the help of AI.
--  Tools for writing more advice tailored specifically to you.
--  Knowledge of how machine learning and natural language processing can help us understand and create text in specific styles.
--  A diploma with your new name, which you will curate from the output of a neural net.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites necessary to participate. This workshop is open to everyone who wants to explore using AI to better understand the potential machine learning and natural language processing.  It's ideal for technical and non-technical folks, professionals, students, and entrepreneurs. Come prepared with a laptop, an open mind, and a sense of humor!

Upon entering the workshop room, you will instantly transported into a fictional, award-winning, self-help seminar that promises to help you up your game and find your inner-winner! Below is an outline of "the program" we will follow for this workshop:

The Program: An A.I. Self-Help Seminar

Jamie Brew is a CEO, so his life is a success. With Jamie's help, your life can succeed too. The Program is Jamie's foolproof system for using artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and the human brain (HB) to become the lifetime succeeder you deserve to be. In this [4-hour] seminar, we will identify a list of personal inspirations, harvest their souls as text data, and use this data to learn how to write and think like them, with the help of Jamie's predictive text software.

Introduction

"I want to tell you a very important lesson for all of us to think about. I want to tell you that the world is not what we think it is. I want to tell you a little tiny little tiny little tiny problem with our infatuation with the brain: the brain is a little kid, but the world is a computer telling us to be smart." -- Jamie Brew, CEO, Botnik Studios

The quote you just read was written with the help of a predictive text keyboard trained on a collection of TED talk transcripts. The keyboard suggested common TED words and phrases, which Jamie stitched together to form words, paragraphs and, eventually, the most inspiring TED talk of all time.

If AI can help write a TED talk, can it help turn your life into a success?

That's the question we'll explore in this data-driven self-help seminar. Using predictive text and other techniques in machine learning and NLP, we will learn to generate new wisdom for ourselves based on the words of the wisest thinkers and speakers of history and today.

Together, we will unlock the transformational power of AI and discover that with enough data and the right attitude, you too can optimize your life with no potential complications or downsides!

What to Expect

Using predictive text and other techniques, we will write:

--  Motivational quotes to inspire us.
--  Mathematically perfect dating tips.
--  Song lyrics based on our influencers.
--  New advice to ourselves based on old advice from thought leaders.
--  Step-by-step instructions for getting ahead in life.

How to Get the Most Out of This Seminar

The first and most important step in using AI to optimize our lives is getting the data! The second half of this seminar will be the most fun if you bring some text you want to analyze. This could include:

--  articles by a writer, group of writers or a whole company
--  transcripts of your favorite speakers
--  a genre or format you find interesting
--  writing from a specific place or time period
--  your own public writing, from blogs to papers to social media posts and beyond
--  emails, text messages, direct messages
--  any text written in a consistent style that you want to understand better

Jamie Brew, CEO of Botnik

Founded in October 2016 by Jamie Brew, a former editor for The Onion’s sister comedy site Clickhole, and Bob Mankoff, who considers himself a "comedy futurist" and served as cartoon editor at The New Yorker for two decades, Botnik is is a brainstorming tool for various types of creativity. With funding from the Amazon Alexa accelerator program, Brew developed Voicebox, a predictive text keyboard (a responsive, robotic writing partner). Whereas Botnik is a digital company that specializes in artificial intelligence-assisted interactive comedy, Botnik Studios is a global community of several thousand writers, artists, and developers who experiment with using computational language tools to remix and transform existing content into new stories, screenplays, books, songs and more.

Jamie is a regular speaker at events and conferences, where he uses music and comedy to explain concepts in machine learning and natural language processing.

About Botnik

Over the past two years, Botnik's AI-assisted humor application has used various, popular, human-created texts to recreate work that has resonated so much with the general public, many of their projects (including the Botnik Bitcoin Explainer) have gone viral and received substantial media coverage for their results including:

  • This Harry Potter AI-generated fan fiction is remarkably good (The Verge)

  • The Surreal Comedy Bot That's Turning AI Into LOL (Wired)

  • Can algorithms be funny? Veterans of Clickhole and the New Yorker team up to find out. (Washington Post)
  • Botnik strikes again with a short Bitcoin explainer made by a predictive text AI that was trained on other Bitcoin explainers. (Motherboard)
  • This Is What Happens When Comedy Writers Collaborate with AI (Vice)
The Botnik creative collective is made up of about 30 writers, artists, and developers who are spread out across the country and the world (literally) and coordinate via Slack and email. Their revenue model is based on selling content to corporations. The Amazon’s Alexa Accelerator program, which they participated in back in 2017, asked Botnik to use their predictive tools to help "humanize" Alexa (Amazon Echo). Botnik has also partnered with CollegeHumor, Funny Or Die and the Onion.
